Signs Someone Put a Love Spell on You: 11 Symptoms Explained

The signs of a love spell usually start with a feeling you can’t explain. You can’t stop thinking about one person, your sleep is gone and your heart jumps at their name. So you start to wonder whether someone put a love spell on you. This guide walks through the 11 signs people report most often. It also opens three archives, ancient medicine, real spell texts and old court cases, to show where each sign comes from and what it can and can’t prove.

In this article:

Physical Signs of a Love Spell: 5 Symptoms in the Body

Folk traditions describe the body first. These are the physical symptoms of a love spell that come up again and again, and they are the signs of a love spell most people notice first.

  1. Nights without sleep. You lie awake, or you dream of the same person night after night. Many practitioners treat this as the classic sign, because old spells asked for it directly (more on that below).
  2. A vanished appetite. Food loses its pull. You skip meals without noticing, and you only feel hungry when you’re near them.
  3. A racing heart at their name. Your face warms and your pulse jumps when they walk in, or even when their name lights up your phone.
  4. Heavy, restless tiredness. You feel drained yet unable to rest. Some people describe it as a weight on the chest that lifts only near that person.
  5. A pull toward a place. You keep finding reasons to pass their street, their café or their door. Traditions describe this as being “drawn,” almost as if your feet decide for you.

People often search for the physical symptoms of a love spell in women specifically. In fact, the old records describe the same body signs in men and women alike, as the archives below show.

Emotional Signs of a Love Spell: 6 More to Watch

The second group of love spell symptoms lives in your thoughts. For many people, these emotional signs of a love spell feel the strangest, because they seem to come from outside.

  1. Thoughts that won’t switch off. The person turns up in every quiet moment. You check their profile, then check it again an hour later.
  2. Attraction out of nowhere. This is someone you barely noticed, or even disliked, until suddenly you didn’t. Practitioners pay close attention to this one, because the change is sudden.
  3. Feelings that clash with your values. Friends say “this isn’t like you.” You defend choices you’d have questioned a month ago.
  4. Big swings when you’re apart. Time together feels bright. Then time apart feels flat, anxious or empty, out of all proportion.
  5. Losing interest in everyone else. A partner, a date or old friends all fade into the background, often without a clear reason.
  6. Odd objects or missing things. Some traditions also watch for outside clues. For example, a strand of hair goes missing, or a stranger asks for a personal item, or a small token shows up where you didn’t leave it.

Doctors Called the Signs of a Love Spell a Disease for 2,000 Years

Almost all the signs of a love spell above once had a medical name: lovesickness. From the time of Galen, the Greek doctor working in Rome, until around the 18th and 19th centuries, physicians treated it as a real diagnosis.[1] Records list insomnia, loss of appetite, hollow eyes, pallor and a rapid pulse among its symptoms. The Roman poet Ovid even wrote a whole book of cures for it, the Remedia Amoris, and advised staying busy.

The most famous case comes from around 294 BC. Prince Antiochus of Syria was wasting away, and no doctor could find the cause. Then the physician Erasistratus noticed something. Whenever the queen, Stratonice, came near, the prince’s skin grew hotter, his colour deepened and his pulse quickened.[2] He was in love with his own stepmother. So the king gave her to his son in marriage.

In other words, a racing heart at someone’s name (sign 3) was the very clue a Greek doctor used to diagnose ordinary, if awkward, love. Galen himself put lovesickness down to strong passion rather than the gods.[1]

The Old Spells That Asked for These Exact Symptoms

The British Library holds Papyrus 121, a 4th-century handbook of spells from Egypt. One of its love spells has the caster write the names of seven gods on seven lamp wicks with myrrh. The target is meant to stay sleepless until they arrive at the caster’s house.[3]

Seven small clay oil lamps burning in a row beside pieces of myrrh resin and dried herbs, recalling an ancient spell meant to cause the signs of a love spell such as sleepless nights

A lead tablet from the 3rd or 4th century goes further. It was found in a jar with a pierced clay doll now in the Louvre. On it, a man named Sarapammon asks a spirit to bind a woman named Ptolemais, so she can’t eat, drink or sleep until she loves him.[4]

So the spell writers aimed for sleeplessness, lost appetite and restless longing. On the list of signs of a love spell above, those are numbers 1, 2 and 4. Also notice who the target was. Ptolemais was a woman, which is one reason the physical symptoms of a love spell in women turn up so often in older material.

When “She Bewitched Me” Ended Up in Court

Because the symptoms looked alike, people sometimes blamed magic for love they couldn’t explain. Around 158 AD, the writer Apuleius stood trial at Sabratha, in today’s Libya. His accusers said he’d won the wealthy widow Pudentilla with “charms and magic spells.” The real worry seems to have been her money leaving the family, and his spirited defence speech, the Apologia, still survives.[5]

Fourteen centuries later, the same idea reached the English court. In 1613, during the annulment of Frances Howard’s marriage to the Earl of Essex, judges seriously considered whether witchcraft was involved. Someone even proposed sending Essex to Poland to be “unwitched.”[6]

In both cases, the signs of a love spell were a convenient story for a relationship that others didn’t like.

What Does a Love Spell Do to a Person? 3 Kinds, 3 Feelings

Modern practitioners usually sort love magic into a few families, and each one is meant to feel different. Knowing the families helps you read your own signs more clearly.

An attraction spell is meant to draw attention. People who believe they’re under one describe noticing someone everywhere, which lines up with signs 6 and 7. A sweetening spell, such as a honey jar, is meant to soften feelings that were already there. Its reported effect is gentler, so a sudden obsession doesn’t fit it well. A binding spell is meant to fix a commitment in place. That is the family closest to the old curse tablets, and the one many modern practitioners say they won’t cast.

So if your feelings arrived suddenly and feel forced, traditions would point to attraction or binding work. If they grew slowly from a real friendship, most practitioners would simply call that falling in love.

Signs of a Love Spell or Plain Infatuation? 3 Archives Weigh In

Put the three archives side by side and a pattern appears.

Sign Ancient doctors Spell texts
No sleep Yes Yes
No appetite Yes Yes
Racing pulse Yes No
Pull to their door No Yes

The signs of a love spell and the symptoms doctors called lovesickness are almost the same list. So no single one of the signs of a love spell can prove that magic is involved. Strong feelings alone can explain every one of them.

That’s why experienced practitioners look past the symptoms. Instead, they ask four questions:

  • Did the feelings start suddenly, on a date you can name?
  • Do they clash with who you are, as in sign 8?
  • Are there outside clues, as in sign 11?
  • What does a reading show?

This reading of the archives is an editorial analysis, not settled scholarship. Still, the conclusion is practical. If your answers are mostly “no,” you’re most likely dealing with ordinary, powerful attraction. If they’re mostly “yes,” a closer look makes sense.

Think Someone Put a Love Spell on You? Do This First

Stay calm if you notice the signs of a love spell in yourself. Fear makes everything feel heavier, and none of these steps is urgent.

  1. Write down the timeline. Note when the feelings began and what changed around that date. A clear start date is the first thing a reader asks about.
  2. Look after your body. Eat, sleep and move. If sleep or appetite stays off for more than a couple of weeks, see a doctor, since stress and illness cause the same signs.
  3. Take a simple cleansing bath. Many traditions use salt and water to clear unwanted energy. Dissolve a handful of salt in warm bathwater and set the intention to keep only what’s truly yours.
  4. Talk to someone you trust. Friends often notice changes in you first, which is why sign 8 matters.
  5. Get a reading. A reading looks at the situation as a whole, not just one symptom.

Why a Symptom List Can’t Answer This, but a Cleansing Can Help

A list of the signs of a love spell only gets you so far, because the same feelings show up with or without magic. So the question shifts from “Is this a spell?” to “Do I want this pull in my life?”

If the answer is no, cleansing work is the traditional next step. It starts with a consultation about your situation. Then a ritual is planned around it, aimed at clearing unwanted energy so your own feelings can settle. The personal cleansing ritual work on this site follows that path. As with any spiritual work, it promises no specific outcome. What it offers is a calm, focused way to take your heart back into your own hands.

And if it turns out the feelings are simply love, that’s worth knowing too. Practitioners are clear about what a love spell can and can’t do, and that line helps here. If you’re curious how ancient casters actually worked, the history of ancient return spells shows the real texts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a love spell feel like?

People usually describe a sudden, constant pull toward one person, with racing thoughts, poor sleep and little appetite. The same feelings also come with ordinary strong attraction.

Can someone put a love spell on you without you knowing?

Traditions say it’s possible, which is why practitioners look for outside clues like missing hair or odd tokens. Most signs still have everyday explanations, so a reading is the usual way to check.

Are the physical symptoms of a love spell different for women?

Not in the old records. Doctors and spell writers described the same signs in men and women: lost sleep, lost appetite and a racing heart.

How long do love spell symptoms last?

Traditions don’t agree on a fixed length. If physical symptoms last more than a couple of weeks, see a doctor as well as a practitioner.

Can the signs of a love spell be cleared?

Many traditions use cleansing baths and cleansing rituals to clear unwanted energy. Practitioners describe this as helping your own feelings settle, not as a guaranteed fix.
